Learning Statement

During the preparation stage we have learned to post and communicate questions that construe our topic. We have realized that in order to achieve success while working as a group we have to:

1) Split the load posted by the task between the group members
2) Constantly communicate our progress to each other
3) Adjust our actions in accordance with our progress
4) Be able to identify group members who are able to work with many seemingly independent questions in the contest of one topic and adjust group’s actions accordingly
5) Adjust our schedules according with the needs of the group and vice versa.

While dealing with the sources of information (in our case we had to research the “human side of the story”) we have learned to:

1) Post our questions ahead of time
2) Anticipate possible developments during the research process
3) Adjust our research questions during the research process (oftentimes we’d discover that our questions are confusing, but interviewee would simplify our task by rephrasing the question)

Group Prospectus

Overview:

Introduction: (Alex V. & David J.)

With our project it is our group’s job to dive into the dynamics of digitization and what it exactly means. In order to do this we will discover what contents can be digitized and forms of presentation and organization of those contents. We’ll also review digitization’s benefits and drawbacks from different perspectives, such as experts in the field of digitization (digitizers), any reference librarians, and a “professional” user perspective.

While researching these three perspectives we’ll dive into smaller sub areas listed below:

Digitizer: (Alex V. & David J.)

· Costs of Digitization (copyright, support, materials, etc.)

· Level of cooperation between libraries (Unnecessary to copy the same book numerous times when it’s already been digitized)

Reference Librarian: (Alex C. & Brandon)

· Management of Information and databases (relevance of information and ease of access)

· How digital libraries compare to traditional libraries (How to present information due to the fact that its massively larger than a traditional libraries archives)

· To discover the actual usage of the reference librarian services as a middle-man

“Professional” User: (Andrew and David M.)

· Benefits of obtaining digitized information

· Problems that occur when trying to access digitized information (Dealing with the massive amount of information and finding the most relevant to what you need)

· What he/she thinks digitization might become in the future

Group Plan:

All of the perspectives above lead to a great interview opportunity to satisfy our human element requirement. Within our group we will split our six into teams of two to research each perspective. When completed we will come back together as a group to share our research and combine our thoughts and ideas to develop our final presentation.

Prospectus Details and Expectations

Two of our diligent members have been so kind as to take on the burden of developing our prospectus on short notice.

The game plan is for that document to make its way to our blog and out of respect for the authors efforts everyone has agreed to post a remark to the blog concerning the prospectus -this is mandatory. Any suggestions or changes should be posted to the blog no later than tuesday at midnight to give the team time to apply them to the prospectus which is due in class wednesday (THIS WEDNESDAY).
